Interview Tips & Tricks
When it
comes to developing your interviewing skills, practice is really the best way
to improve. If it's one of your first professional interviews, here are a few
tips and tricks for a great interview.
Resumé:
Resumés and
cover letters can look similar, especially if we see a lot of them in a month.
Here are few tips to set you apart.
Proofread:
Don't waste
your entire effort by sending out resumés and cover letters only to find out
that they have typos in them. Your written language skills tell us about how
you would communicate while working for us. Review your documents before you
hit send.
Make it easy to read:
Even while
following standard format, there are a number of ways you can make your resumé
easier to read - including using bullet points or tables.
Interview discussion:
Interview
discussions should be engaging and lively. Any candidate can regurgitate the
job description. Take the time to learn about the company before your
interview. Have we been in the news lately, do you know anything about our
student programs?
What makes you unique?
What can you
offer Agrium that others in your graduating class cannot? Do you have any work
experience that sets you apart? Do you have relevant volunteer experience that
would give you an edge?
Know your strengths:
When you are
asked about your strengths, be prepared to list off what attributes set you
apart from other candidates.
Never make negative comments about former employers:
It may be
tempting to tell the world about how you were treated at a previous employer -
but don't do it. Remember, stay professional.
When the interviewer says, "Do you have any
questions?":
Ask
questions, be engaged and get to know the person across the table. This gives
you the opportunity to show your passion for the career you hope to have.
Engaging your interviewer in meaningful conversation may also set you apart
from others interviewed.
No trick questions:
There will
not be any trick questions asked. Don't over think the questions just focus on
your past experience.
Don't give up:
If you don't
experience success the first time, don't give up, try again. Agrium has hired
employees that applied several times unsuccessfully before getting the job they
wanted. If setbacks occur, don't take it personally.
